JBP directed, filmed, and edited both parts of Know Your History alongside Broughton Ganaway of BPCFG. The Racial Reconcilers of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in East Liberty strives to create unity through understanding. This two-part miniseries focuses on key points of history surrounding enslaved, freed, and modern African-Americans. Part Two goes further to understand the need to remove confederate monuments that were created at the height of Jim Crow.
Part One
Written and performed by Armetta Swan, Know Your History: Part One shares an abridged history of African’s brought to America in slave ships, the slavery and freedom of African Americans, Jim Crow, desegregation, and modern movements such as Black Lives Matter.
Part Two
Written and performed by Natalie Settles, Know Your History: Part Two explores ingrained systems of systemic racism in the fabric of America. Focusing on the history and imagery of confederate monuments, this segment shines a stark light on symbols of Jim Crow era racism and the battle to remove them.
